Location, Location, Location: Incorporating the eastern two-thirds of the Island Hispaniola, the Dominican Republic is located in the Caribbean between the North Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The terrain includes highlands and mountains blended with fertile valleys.

Government: Germany is governed as a federal republic with a President and written constitution.

Size Matters: The total land area of the Dominican Republic is 48,670 sq km, comparable to twice the size of the U.S. state of New Hampshire.

Population: As of July 2009, the Dominican Republic’s population was estimated at 9,650,054, of which 51.5% is male and 48.5% is female.

Business Environment: The Dominican Republic was ranked the 97^th best country in the world for business in a 2009 Doingbusiness.com ranking.

Top Industries: In terms of paid jobs, the labor force in 2005 was comprised of services (63.1%), industry (22.3%) and agriculture (14.6%).

Taxes: A 2008 report from the World Bank considered the Dominican Republic as the top tax reformer when it lowered its corporate income tax from 30% to 25% and eliminated several additional taxes on businesses.

Weather: Offering a wonderful beach vacation, the Dominican Republic enjoys a tropical maritime climate with little seasonal temperature variation.

Education: Primary education is both compulsory and free for children between the ages of 5 and 14, with 87% of the population deemed literate as of 2005.

In General: The Dominican Republic boasts one of the largest economies in the Caribbean region, dependent mostly on agriculture, trade and tourist-related services.

Services: The services sector is the leading employer of the Dominican Republic’s workforce and account for over half of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Not surprising tourism is the leading revenue generator in this sector, followed by a growing retail trade industry.

Industry: A majority of industry in the Dominican Republic involves the export of goods to the North American market, primarily the United States and Canada. Many foreign-owned corporations operate within the Dominica Republic in response to advantageous tax laws.

Agriculture: Agriculture remains a prominent element of the Dominican Republic’s economy even with recent industrial advancements promoted by international trade agreements. Leading cash crops include sugar cane, coffee, cocoa and tobacco.
